I'll Tell You What Happened...

The Tales of Hawtin Mundy

A one-man show presented by Brad Bradstock

Hawtin Mundy first came to my attention when his nephew, Bert, asked whether we would be interested in publishing his uncle's tape-recorded memories as a prisoner during the First World War. At that time, it didn't sound very exciting and, to be honest, I thought there was no way we'd be able to sell such a book locally. However, I agreed to go along to his uncle's house and meet him, the rest they say, is history, and now after more than twenty years the stories are still being told

Brad Bradstock recreates Hawtin and in fact really does seem to become this wonderful old man. Nothing is rushed, nothing is hurried, yet the power of the piece is tremendous. Taking us through his childhood and early years, from one anecdote to another, he quietly softens us up for the chilling tales he has to tell from the First World War.
The language of his performance comes straight from tape-recorded interviews with Hawtin: there is a quality in this man's speech - a beauty and economy - which any playwright would find almost impossible to match.
The performance is broken up with specially-written songs, also simply and beautifully delivered by Brad
